Descript alternatives for adding captions
Descript is built for editing audio and video through a transcript. If your video is already cut and you only need captions on it, a different tool may fit better. If you need to edit, Descript may still be the right answer.

Captioning a finished video is a different job from editing one
Descript edits audio and video by editing a transcript like a document, with recording, AI audio cleanup and clip tools; translation and dubbing are listed on Business. Descript's captions help describes caption presets built from the script, with font, size, alignment, text and background colours, stroke and outline, active-word styling and word, line or paragraph animation.
That workflow is powerful when the transcript is how you cut the video: removing a sentence removes the footage. When the edit is already done in another app, the question is simpler — how do the captions look, and what does the free export give you?
- Free exports. Descript's help centre says Free plan exports are limited to 720p and carry a Descript watermark in the bottom-right corner.
- Subtitle files. Descript's help says subtitles export as an SRT or VTT file uploaded alongside the video, and that captions which stay on the video are a separate captions feature. The article states no plan restriction.
- Paid plans. Descript's paid plans export without a watermark: 1080p on Hobbyist with 10 media hours a month, 4K on Creator with 30 media hours a month.

This is our product, so weigh this entry accordingly. It is a caption tool: no trimming, music, B-roll, multi-clip timeline or general video editing. No plan adds an Auto Subtitle Generator watermark to exported video, including Free.
What works
- Free includes 3 distinct video projects per calendar month; revising and downloading the same project again that month uses the same slot.
- SRT, VTT and TXT files can be downloaded on every plan after signing in, and do not use a video project slot.
- Free exports up to 1080p from videos up to 10 minutes and 500 MB.
What does not
- Every caption style can be previewed; 2 of them, Clean Minimal and Documentary, can be exported on Free. Premium styles need Starter to export.

VEED
Subtitles are one tool inside VEED's wider browser editor, which also lists AI video generation, audio tools, background removal, translation and dubbing.

- VEED's export help lists 720p on the Free plan, up to 1080p on Creator, and up to 4K on Pro, Studio and Enterprise.
What does not
- VEED's help centre states that projects exported from a free account carry a VEED watermark, and that only a paid subscription exports without it.

Clipchamp
Microsoft's help for Clipchamp, covering personal and work accounts, describes editable, styleable autocaptions that are exported as part of the video, with a separate .SRT download. The article does not say which plans include it.

YouTube Studio automatic captions
YouTube creates automatic captions for uploaded videos in supported languages. Its help says they may not be ready at upload, can misrepresent speech, and can be reviewed and edited in YouTube Studio.
What works
- No extra tool for videos that stay on YouTube.
- Captions can be corrected in YouTube Studio.
What does not
- The help pages we read describe captions on YouTube itself, not a captioned file to post elsewhere.
When Descript is still the better choice
- You record podcasts or talking videos and cut them by deleting words from the transcript.
- You need audio cleanup, recording and captions in the same project.
- You work with audio-only files; our product accepts video only.
- You need translation or dubbing, which Descript lists on its Business plan and our product does not offer.
