Subtitle effects, one layer at a time.

Every caption style is built from the same few layers: an outline, a shadow, a box, an emphasis on the spoken word and an entrance. Mix them on one plain caption below, switch the footage behind it, and see which layers are doing the work.

Ranges and names match the editor. Pixel values are measured on a 1080 × 1920 export, so the preview keeps their real weight beside the letters.

Each layer in detail

Outline and shadow

The edge around each letter and the depth beneath it. The cheapest way to keep white captions readable on footage you do not control.

Background box

A calm colour behind the line or behind each word. The most reliable readability effect, and the one that hides the most of the shot.

Glowing subtitles

A halo behind the spoken word. Strong on dark footage, blurry on bright footage, and a word-timing effect rather than a line style.

Text animations

Grow, shift, slide, fade and pop compared at one duration, with the timing that keeps captions readable while they arrive.

How the layers stack

The box sits behind the line, the outline and shadow are drawn around the letters, and emphasis changes the word being spoken. An entrance animates the whole result as it arrives. Each layer is independent, so you can turn any one off without losing the others.

Readability first, then character

Settle readability before adding motion: an outline or box until the caption reads on the brightest shot, then emphasis, then an entrance. Effects added in that order rarely fight each other.

What the previews are

The footage here is drawn, not filmed: a bright sky, a busy street and a dark interior stand in for the shots captions most often fail on. Outline, shadow, glow and box are drawn with the same formulas as the video export, at the proportions of a 1080 × 1920 export.

Questions about subtitle effects

Which subtitle effect improves readability most?+

A background box, because it guarantees the colour behind the text. An outline is a close second and hides far less of the picture.

Are these the same effects as in the editor?+

Yes. The mixer offers the editor's own options under the same names and ranges, so a combination you like here can be set up the same way after you upload a video.

Do effects carry over to SRT or VTT downloads?+

No. Effects are drawn into the video when you export an MP4. Subtitle files carry text and timing, and the player decides how they look.
