VEED alternatives for captioning a video
VEED is a full browser video editor with subtitles built in. If captions are the job you came for, several tools do that job with different trade-offs. The facts below come from each company's own pricing and help pages.
Disclosure: Published by Auto Subtitle Generator, which is one of the products compared on this page. Links to other products are ordinary links, not affiliate links. Our own figures come from the code that enforces our plans; every figure about another product comes from that company’s own page, listed under Sources.
Why people look for a VEED alternative
Subtitles are one tool inside VEED's wider browser editor, which also lists AI video generation, audio tools, background removal, translation and dubbing. That breadth is useful when the whole edit happens there. It is also why a person who only needs captions often looks elsewhere.
- Free exports are watermarked. VEED's help centre states that projects exported from a free account carry a VEED watermark, and that only a paid subscription exports without it.
- Free export quality. VEED's export help lists 720p on the Free plan, up to 1080p on Creator, and up to 4K on Pro, Studio and Enterprise.
- Subtitle files are a paid feature. VEED's subtitle help says subtitle files can be downloaded as SRT or VTT on Pro and Enterprise plans.
- Translation and speakers cost more. VEED lists translation into 50+ languages on Pro and Studio; its FAQ says translations are counted in minutes against the plan allowance, and its help says translation uses AI credits. VEED's subtitle help describes Detect Speakers as a paid feature available on Pro or higher.
None of that makes VEED a poor product. If you need trimming, audio tools, translation or speaker detection in the same place as captions, staying with VEED may be simpler than stitching several tools together.

The alternatives in detail
Auto Subtitle Generator — our product
This is the site you are reading, so weigh this entry accordingly. It does one job: generate captions for a video you already have, let you correct and style them, and export. No plan adds an Auto Subtitle Generator watermark to exported video, including Free. Free includes 3 distinct video projects per calendar month; revising and downloading the same project again that month uses the same slot.
What works
- Free exports have no product watermark.
- SRT, VTT and TXT files can be downloaded on every plan after signing in, and do not use a video project slot.
- Word-level caption styles you can preview on your own footage before paying.
What does not
- Free exports up to 1080p from videos up to 10 minutes and 500 MB.
- Every caption style can be previewed; 2 of them, Clean Minimal and Documentary, can be exported on Free. Premium styles need Starter to export.
- The product does not translate captions, label or detect speakers, find clips in a longer video, or post to social platforms.
- It is a caption tool: no trimming, music, B-roll, multi-clip timeline or general video editing.
Kapwing
Kapwing presents itself as an online creative studio: video editor, subtitler, dubbing, clip maker, speaker focus and collaboration tools alongside captions.
What works
- Closest to VEED's all-in-one scope, in a browser.
- Publishes its free-plan limits in detail.
What does not
- Kapwing's Free plan lists unlimited exports with a watermark, videos up to 4 minutes, 720p, a 30-minute monthly export limit, 2 GB uploads and 3 days of storage.
- Kapwing's plan comparison marks SRT/VTT and transcript downloads as unavailable on Free and included on Pro, Business and Enterprise.
Descript
Descript edits audio and video by editing a transcript like a document, with recording, AI audio cleanup and clip tools; translation and dubbing are listed on Business.
What works
- A strong fit when the video needs cutting, not just captioning.
- Descript's help says subtitles export as an SRT or VTT file uploaded alongside the video, and that captions which stay on the video are a separate captions feature. The article states no plan restriction.
What does not
- Descript's help centre says Free plan exports are limited to 720p and carry a Descript watermark in the bottom-right corner.
- A larger editing application to learn if captions are the only task.
Clipchamp
Microsoft's help for Clipchamp, covering personal and work accounts, describes editable, styleable autocaptions that are exported as part of the video, with a separate .SRT download. The article does not say which plans include it.
What works
- Captions live inside a general video editor from Microsoft.
- An SRT file is available alongside the video.
What does not
- Plan availability for autocaptions is not stated in the help article we read, so check before relying on it.
YouTube Studio automatic captions
YouTube creates automatic captions for uploaded videos in supported languages. Its help says they may not be ready at upload, can misrepresent speech, and can be reviewed and edited in YouTube Studio. If the video will only ever be watched on YouTube, this may be all you need, at no cost.
What works
- No extra tool for videos that stay on YouTube.
- Captions can be corrected in YouTube Studio.
What does not
- The help pages we read describe captions on YouTube itself, not a captioned video file to post elsewhere.
- They may not be ready immediately after upload.
How to choose
- Decide whether you need an editor or a caption tool. Cutting, music and multi-clip timelines point to VEED, Kapwing, Descript or Clipchamp.
- Check what free actually exports. A watermark, a length cap or a monthly allowance matters more than the word free.
- Check the handoff format. If a platform needs an SRT or VTT file, confirm which plan includes subtitle downloads.
- Check the extras you depend on. Translation, speaker detection and clip-finding are not universal; our product offers none of them.
- Try it on your own clip. Accuracy and caption style are easiest to judge on real footage.
What this page does not cover
We did not create accounts or buy subscriptions on the other products, so nothing about their transcription accuracy, speed or editor behaviour is claimed here. CapCut is not included: its official pages were unavailable from our region when this page was researched, and we do not describe products from secondary sources. For a closer look at the two products side by side, see Auto Subtitle Generator vs VEED.
