Kapwing alternatives for captioning a video

Kapwing is a collaborative browser studio with a strong subtitle tool inside it. Some people want less editor and fewer limits on free exports; others want a different kind of editor altogether. These are the trade-offs, from each company's own pages.

Plans, limits and prices were read from each company's own pricing and help pages on 2026-09-17. None of the other products was tested hands-on, and prices can differ by region; the sources list every page used.

What Kapwing does well, and why people look elsewhere

Kapwing presents itself as an online creative studio: video editor, subtitler, dubbing, clip maker, speaker focus and collaboration tools alongside captions. Kapwing's subtitle help lists font, size, colour, background, outline, drop shadow, capitalisation, animations and transitions, with bold, italic, underline and colour on individual words. Kapwing's help lists 155 language variants for subtitles and automated subtitle translation, with translation minutes allocated per plan on its pricing page.

  • Free exports are limited. Kapwing's Free plan lists unlimited exports with a watermark, videos up to 4 minutes, 720p, a 30-minute monthly export limit, 2 GB uploads and 3 days of storage.
  • Free subtitling is capped. Kapwing's Free plan includes auto-subtitling for up to 10 minutes, paid for with credits.
  • Subtitle files need a paid plan. Kapwing's plan comparison marks SRT/VTT and transcript downloads as unavailable on Free and included on Pro, Business and Enterprise.

If your team edits together, translates subtitles or needs speaker labels, those are reasons to stay: Kapwing documents a speaker label feature for subtitles, which assigns and renames labels for different speakers after transcription.

The alternatives in detail

Auto Subtitle Generator — our product

This is our product, so weigh this entry accordingly. It captions a video you already have; it is not a studio. No plan adds an Auto Subtitle Generator watermark to exported video, including Free. Free includes 3 distinct video projects per calendar month; revising and downloading the same project again that month uses the same slot.

What works

  • No product watermark on free exports.
  • SRT, VTT and TXT files can be downloaded on every plan after signing in, and do not use a video project slot.
  • Free exports up to 1080p from videos up to 10 minutes and 500 MB.

What does not

  • Every caption style can be previewed; 2 of them, Clean Minimal and Documentary, can be exported on Free. Premium styles need Starter to export.
  • The product does not translate captions, label or detect speakers, find clips in a longer video, or post to social platforms.
  • It is a caption tool: no trimming, music, B-roll, multi-clip timeline or general video editing.
  • No shared team workspace.

VEED

Subtitles are one tool inside VEED's wider browser editor, which also lists AI video generation, audio tools, background removal, translation and dubbing.

What works

  • A similar all-in-one editor if you want to keep that way of working.
  • VEED's export help lists 720p on the Free plan, up to 1080p on Creator, and up to 4K on Pro, Studio and Enterprise.

What does not

  • VEED's help centre states that projects exported from a free account carry a VEED watermark, and that only a paid subscription exports without it.
  • VEED's subtitle help says subtitle files can be downloaded as SRT or VTT on Pro and Enterprise plans.

Descript

Descript edits audio and video by editing a transcript like a document, with recording, AI audio cleanup and clip tools; translation and dubbing are listed on Business.

What works

  • Suits spoken video that needs cutting by transcript.
  • Descript's help says subtitles export as an SRT or VTT file uploaded alongside the video, and that captions which stay on the video are a separate captions feature. The article states no plan restriction.

What does not

  • Descript's help centre says Free plan exports are limited to 720p and carry a Descript watermark in the bottom-right corner.

Clipchamp

Microsoft's help for Clipchamp, covering personal and work accounts, describes editable, styleable autocaptions that are exported as part of the video, with a separate .SRT download. The article does not say which plans include it.

What works

  • A general editor from Microsoft with captions built in.
  • An SRT download is documented.

What does not

  • Plan availability for autocaptions is not stated in the help article we read.

YouTube Studio automatic captions

YouTube creates automatic captions for uploaded videos in supported languages. Its help says they may not be ready at upload, can misrepresent speech, and can be reviewed and edited in YouTube Studio. For a video that only lives on YouTube, it may be enough.

What works

  • No extra tool for videos that stay on YouTube.
  • Captions can be corrected in YouTube Studio.

What does not

  • The help pages we read describe captions on YouTube itself, not a captioned file to post elsewhere.

How to choose

  1. Do several people edit the same project? Kapwing's Pro plan card lists a collaborative shared workspace, a Brand Kit and custom fonts. VEED's Enterprise plan lists central management of teams and data, review mode for videos and privacy controls.
  2. Is the video already cut? A caption tool asks less of you than a studio.
  3. How long is the video? Check each free plan's length and monthly export limits against your real clips.
  4. Do you need a subtitle file? Confirm which plan includes SRT or VTT downloads.
  5. Do you need translation or speaker labels? Our product offers neither.

What this page does not cover

We did not create accounts or buy subscriptions on the other products, so accuracy, speed and editor feel are not compared. CapCut is not included: its official pages were unavailable from our region when this was researched. For the two products side by side, see Auto Subtitle Generator vs Kapwing.
