Auto Subtitle Generator vs Kapwing for captioning a video

Both generate, correct, style and burn in captions. Kapwing wraps that in a collaborative browser studio; Auto Subtitle Generator does the captioning job and little else. This page compares them on captioning only.

How this was checked

Our figures come from the code that enforces our plans. Kapwing's come from its pricing and help pages, read on 2026-09-17. We did not test Kapwing hands-on, so accuracy, speed and editor feel are not compared.

The short answer

Choose Auto Subtitle Generator when

  • Your video is already edited and only needs captions.
  • You want a free export without a watermark, or SRT and VTT files without a paid plan.
  • Your free videos run longer than 4 minutes, up to our 10-minute Free limit.

Choose Kapwing when

  • Several people need to edit the same project.
  • You need subtitles translated or speakers labelled.
  • The video still needs trimming, resizing or other editing before captions.

On a free plan

No plan adds an Auto Subtitle Generator watermark to exported video, including Free. Free includes 3 distinct video projects per calendar month; revising and downloading the same project again that month uses the same slot. Free exports up to 1080p from videos up to 10 minutes and 500 MB. Every caption style can be previewed; 2 of them, Clean Minimal and Documentary, can be exported on Free. Premium styles need Starter to export.

Kapwing's Free plan lists unlimited exports with a watermark, videos up to 4 minutes, 720p, a 30-minute monthly export limit, 2 GB uploads and 3 days of storage. Kapwing's Free plan includes auto-subtitling for up to 10 minutes, paid for with credits. Kapwing's plan comparison marks SRT/VTT and transcript downloads as unavailable on Free and included on Pro, Business and Enterprise.

Uploading, generating, editing and styling work without an account; Google or email sign-in is required to download anything.

Paying for more

Starter costs $7 billed monthly or $60 billed yearly, with 200 MP4 exports a month, 4K output and videos up to 120 minutes and 5 GB. Guest projects are removed after a day, Free projects after 7 days and Starter projects after 90 days.

Kapwing lists Pro at $16 per member per month billed annually or $24 billed monthly, and Business at $50 billed annually or $64 billed monthly; Enterprise is custom. Kapwing's Pro plan removes the watermark and lists 4K export, 6 GB uploads, 120-minute video export length and up to 1,000 auto-subtitling minutes a month.

Comparing prices

Both pages showed US dollars to us, and both offer monthly and yearly billing. Kapwing prices per member; ours is per account. Check both pages in your region before deciding.

Styling and delivering captions

Kapwing's subtitle help lists font, size, colour, background, outline, drop shadow, capitalisation, animations and transitions, with bold, italic, underline and colour on individual words. Kapwing's help describes burning styled subtitles into the video or downloading them as SRT, VTT or a TXT transcript, and says Free workspaces have restrictions on subtitle generation.

Captions carry word-level timing, so the 14 preset styles can highlight or reveal the word being spoken, and placement can be checked against TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts interface overlays. SRT, VTT and TXT files can be downloaded on every plan after signing in, and do not use a video project slot.

Translation, speakers and teams

Kapwing's help lists 155 language variants for subtitles and automated subtitle translation, with translation minutes allocated per plan on its pricing page. Kapwing documents a speaker label feature for subtitles, which assigns and renames labels for different speakers after transcription. Kapwing's Pro plan card lists a collaborative shared workspace, a Brand Kit and custom fonts.

The product does not translate captions, label or detect speakers, find clips in a longer video, or post to social platforms. The uploader accepts MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV video files from the device, up to 120 minutes on any plan. There is no audio-only upload and no import from a URL.
